With Sarah Palin's momentous announcement on her Facebook page that she will in effect not support any policitician who votes for the Schumer-Toomey-Manchin Gun Registry Bill she has put the (media generated) potential 2016 GOP presidential contenders on notice.
The implications for Messrs. Paul, Rubio, Ryan, Portman are clear and stark. If they vote for this bill they will not have the support of Sarah Palin in the primary campaign and, if they were nominated, in the general election. Governor's like Christie and Jindal will also come under scrutiny for their hoem state actions.
Does Palin's support have any power? Ask now Senators Ted Cruz and Senator Deb Fischer amongst a host of elected officials who received Palin's endorsement and went on to win against the odds-in some cases dramatically so.
If Palin chooses to run in 2016, and any Republican candidate supported this legislation, she will hammer this home at them from start to finish. If she doesn't run she will be in the postion of endorsing an opponent of someone who voted for the bill and, not being a candidate herself, have enormous credibility.
And, dare I say it, if there were a large number of GOP candidates who had voted for this bill then the road is open to a third party"a plague on both your houses' run.
How the potential Republican 2016 candidates for president now vote, and how they justify it ,and what their response to Palin's comment will be is something to be watched with great interest for a number of reasons of possibly great historical import.
