Two years ago today (two years and a day if you are in the Eastern time zone or read this when you wake up in the morning) Governor Palin gave one of the most significant speeches of her career.  While in Indianola, Iowa, she spoke to a couple of thousand Tea Party activists and put everyone on notice that she was coming after the permanent political class and the crony capitalism they love so much.  There is no question this spooked the establishments of both political parties.  While Governor Palin is certainly not the first person to talk about this and won’t be the last, I think it’s safe to to say she has been the most prominent politician to take this up.  It helps that she has credibility on this, as this has kind of been her thing since her political career began back in the early 1990s.  There is a lot of work ahead, and while we all know the problems she talked about two years ago will not be solved by one person, or with one election cycle, or one administration, it is my hope that the day will come when the speech Governor Palin gave in a field in Indianola, Iowa on 9/3/2011 will no longer be necessary.

The Louisville Kentucky Courier Journal has a touching article about the last National Quartet Convention being held there as many members are to elderly to circumnavigate the stadium. They included a video retrospective which includes a wonderful piece on Sarah Palin's heartfelt, obviously highly emotional and inspiring tribute to her Christian life from her 2010 address there.

Four months ago (3 May 2013) The Week Magazine quoted from the Russian press following the Boston Bombings, presaging the Syrian question:

(Moskovsky Komsomolets on the Beslan Chechen terrorist murders of 330+ school members): Maybe now the Americans will correct their "hidden belief that terrorists who strike them are bad, while terrorists who strike Russia are good."

Yet the Americans have a similarly skewed attitude about Syria, said Nzavisimaya Gazeta in an editorial. The Boston bombers are extremists Wahhabis. They share Jihadist fanaticism with some 3,000 Arab militants fighting with the Syrian opposition.  

The Americans say they are fighting al Qaida, and strongly condemn the terrorism of the Tsarnaev brothers, yet they send help to the Syrian rebels. That reveals a "moral double standard" that "continues to divide terrorists and extremists into friends and foes." Until we agree that all terrorists are the enemy of all states, we will never be able to wipe out this scourge.

But we know what is right and what is wrong. And I am here today to make sure you can make the choices you need to do right by your family.

She didn’t have to spell it all out, she showed it to us Wednesday night. She showed us that even a small-town gal from Alaska can be successful and be a leader.

And she laid the groundwork for invigorating a movement. Immediately after her speech, National Review Online readers e-mailed me to tell me they had just watched the next Ronald Reagan, the long-awaited successor.

In an article written by Michael Calderone for The Politico, Laura Ingraham had this to say about Governor Palin’s speech: "It’s one of the best political speeches I have heard — ever!" In the same Politico article, even the deranged Keith Olbermann couldn’t bring himself to criticize her speech. In a visibly depressed NBC studio that was so eerily silent you could almost hear Chris Mathews’ leg tingling, Olbermann allowed that Governor Palin "clearly gives a great speech".

Governor Palin then blew the roof off the place. Everyone knew she had to perform and boy did she ever. Line after line she had every one in the arena jumping right out of their chairs. And finally, David Von Drehle, in an article for Time, wrote that the early prediction of a rather dismal GOP convention couldn’t have been more wrong:

And there was only one real reason for that: Sarah Palin. Two simple words, but with a lot of meaning to unpack. First comes star power — Palin has it; McCain doesn’t, and neither did any of the other men who ran for the party’s nomination this year, which is why McCain managed to outlast them. As the also-rans trooped onstage to deliver their obligatory endorsements, Republicans were reminded that Mitt Romney looked like a leading man but lacked the magic; that Fred Thompson and Mike Huckabee were never going to be more than character actors; and that Rudy Giuliani was a one-hit wonder as a leading man. While the runners-up looked on bravely, Palin blew past them to the head of the line, a cloud of snow and mystery in her wake.

On another level, Palin thrilled the Republicans by showing that Barack Obama has vulnerabilities, and she knows how to poke them. When McCain sprang his surprise choice on the public, the initial analysis held that by putting the rookie Governor of Alaska on the ticket he had erased the issue of experience. But like a lot of early thinking, that was wrong. Palin put the experience issue front and center, because suddenly America was seriously weighing the relative qualifications of the Democratic nominee versus the recent mayor of Wasilla. That’s a comparison Obama loses simply by being involved in it.

The difference between the Ivy League taught people and the regular American is light years. The former (the Ivy Leaguers) are more interested in the world, the global economy and moving large capital formations through different global markets. But for regular Americans, like you and me and

Sarah Palin, we are concerned with the national interests of the United States!
In a recent article in WND Weekly "Sarah Palin jumps into Syria Dispute" former Governor Sarah Palin spoke frankly and directly to the ongoing controversy over what to do with respect to the civil war in Syria. Palin's policy prescription was simple; "Let Allah sort it out." You can't be more succinct than that. Palin said it's a "centuries-old internal struggle between violent radical Islamists and a murderous dictatorial regime."

For scores of years the United States has been overly involved in the Middle East. During the Cold War American policy in the Middle East was integrated into its global contest with the Soviet Union. But once America won the Cold War, regional disputes that had been suppressed by the nuclear power stand off quickly moved to the front burner on the global stage.
Underlying U.S. policy are two foundations not directly connected to US national interests; the security of Israel and the world oil market. (The US has sufficient domestic energy reserves to separate itself from the world market.)

U. S. policy in the Middle East has been inconsistent, fragmented, and intrusive. American policy has supported democracy, unless the victors participating in the democracy oppose the United States, or Isreal or the New World Order. Then American might shifted to the dictator! Egypt is the most recent example of unrealistic U.S. policy.

The policy of pre-emptive strike has not proven to be either cost effective, or enhancing to U.S. prestige. The world that relies on Mid East oil followed the example of America's welfare class by accepting the benevolence of the U.S. government with disdain. Japan, Europe, and other oil consumers are not standing lining up as supporters of a Syria strike. In fact, Britain, whose industries sold the chemicals to make Sarin gas to Syria, have retreated from their once belligerent stance against Assad, to one of "wait and see."

Governor Palin asked if our invasion and disposal of Saddam Hussein did not deter Syria from using chemical weapons, why do we think lobbing a few missiles at Syria will have any affect.
Palin is doing the "Palin," talking common sense, asking policy questions which are inconvenient to the ruling elite! Once again Sarah is applying her very highly tuned intellect to the issue, and asking the questions we would ask! And unlike her mentor John McCain, or Lindsey Graham of South Carolina, Palin will not be bought off!

Palin’s foreign policy intuition is spot on. No one, not President Obama, not Secretary of State Kerry or anyone else has been able to tell us why we have lob missiles at Syria, except that our President talked about red lines. Well Mr. President if you had been playing golf that day, or fund raising, you would not have talked yourself into one more Obamaism!

So there I was, minding my own business at the coffee shop, when a trim and tailored blonde took one look at the book I was reading, “Sarah From Alaska,” and sneered (as only a trim and tailored blonde can do): “If she wasn’t a woman, McCain wouldn’t have picked her, and we never would have heard of her.”

As I later explained on my Facebook page, I came back with: “And if Barack Obama were not the ‘first serious black candidate,’ those outside of Chicago might never have heard of him, either.”

That posting garnered 120 comments at last count, a personal best for yours truly. Many of the responses supported my viewpoint (which is why they’re my virtual “friends”) while a few stalwart souls insisted on convincing the rest of us that Palin was stupid and Obama was, in all respects, superior. They completely missed the point that identity politics are toxic precisely because they prevent us from looking at people as individuals and force us to judge them on qualities (melanin, chromosomes) over which they have no control and which have no relevance — in this case — to their qualification for office.

My favorite comments were from those male “friends” who told me I was “too smart” to believe that Palin was qualified for anything other than a “Saturday Night Live” cameo. People who tell you you’re “too smart” for something are generally saying, in not-so-elegant code, that they are smarter than both you and the Alaskan caribou you rode in on.

The thing that perhaps most surprised me about this late August social media skirmish is that even today, five years after she exploded on the national scene, Sarah Palin still represents that line in the political/cultural sand that divides the enlightened from the knuckle draggers. It seems that unless you disassociate yourself from her completely (and cover that book you are reading in brown wrapping paper) people will feel free to question your judgment, your breeding, your intelligence and your sanity. They will have no problem poking their redone noses into your happy little java moment and tell you that you — a stranger — have really bad literary taste.

If, on the other hand, you point out that Palin’s gender is analogous to Obama’s race with respect to their ascension in the public eye, you will set off a firestorm of rhetoric defending the president and implying that you are six degrees removed from George Wallace.

No one denies that Barack Obama is a smart man. Some might argue that he is not as bright as his supporters would have us believe, particularly when it comes to an understanding of the separation of powers and the appropriate role of both the Justice and Treasury Departments. Nonetheless, he is undoubtedly gifted.

If, however, we accept that fact, we are equally obligated to recognize that a lot of other bright and gifted men didn’t win the Democratic nomination back in 2008 since President Obama did not have a corner on talent. What was that extra “je ne sais quoi” that pushed him out in front? Could it have been the desire of so many Americans (not all of them white liberals, but a lot) to see a black man in office? That question answers itself.

That question also paints me as a racist, in many quarters. It is considered demeaning to focus on our president’s skin color when talking about his contributions to the political present, even though he himself has begun to make a point about it in recent years. The Henry Gates beer summit was one sad example. The Trayvon Martin debacle was another. So if the president is able to talk about race, why can’t we?

Pivoting back to Palin, there is no question that her gender was probably the single most intriguing factor about her candidacy. As the authors of my notorious summer read observed, “[McCain’s] vice presidential candidate had to appeal to female voters.” It is the nature of the political beast that you pander to the loudest constituencies, and at the risk of sounding sexist (since I’m also racist,) who can outshout or outlast a woman in a rhetorical debate? Anyone who has seen Real Housewives reunion knows I’m right.

It is not surprising, then that the growling Mama Grizzly got the attention of a party so often accused of ignoring women.

You can say this and get a “Mm hmm.” Try, however, to suggest that Barack Obama was plucked out of the same relative obscurity as “Nanette of the North” to satisfy a black demographic and you will be roundly criticized as misinformed, or worse.

This is the great danger of identity politics. Once you start judging people on one irrelevant aspect of their biology, you can’t avoid judging them on other aspects. It’s a matter of consistency. My Facebook friends who were so offended that I would suggest that Barack Obama benefitted from his race should be equally offended by the notion that Sarah Palin benefitted (solely) from her gender.

Sadly, they’re not.
